We are looking for a motivated and visionary leader to help drive membership through developing and expanding our Sports program that appeals to various members of our community. This is a great opportunity for a candidate looking to lead the way and continue to grow membership in our brand new 60,000 square foot facility in Westlake Village, CA.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Sports Director is responsible for developing, organizing, delivering and administering sports leagues, recreation programs and and activities targeted toward youth and adults at the Yarrow YMCA. The ability to prioritize, drive results through others and a strong focus on team development is key to achieving results in this role.  In addition, this person will strive to meet the needs of the community.  The ideal candidate will inspire members through movement, community, and personal attention. This person will be a liaison to committee(s) and advisory board(s) and live our core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

Essential Functions

  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs staff and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information, may organize and schedule program registrations. May review and process program scholarship applications.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Coordinates use of facilities for program activities and events.
  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • May assist with Program Committee meetings.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs.
  • Secures and schedules athletic fields and facilities.
  • Organizes and conducts parent orientation meetings.
  • Organizes and conducts coaches training and meetings.
  • Creates teams from paid and financially assisted registrations.
  • Develops and distributes team practice and game schedules.
  • Works with Sports Coordinator in training and scheduling Sports Officials
  • Develops and distributes sports rules, guidelines and handbooks
  • Purchases and distributes team uniforms and awards.
  • Coordinates and distributes team photographs.
  • Organizes and hosts season parties and events.
  • Transports and sets up equipment for games and practices.
  • Monitors and purchases necessary sporting equipment.
  • Organizes and conducts sports clinics.


  • Previous YMCA experience preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent
  • Two years of program management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency
  • Ability to direct programs through supervision of volunteers and staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, program development and fundraising
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Extensive knowledge of technology to include the Microsoft Office Suite, operations database and social media
  • CPR, First Aid and AED certifications must be kept up to date
  • Criminal Record Clearance
