Are you looking to build relationships, impact lives and strengthen your community? The Conejo YMCA located in Thousand Oaks, CA is seeking an Water Fitness Instructor. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Water Fitness Instructor will lead members through group exercise activities and educates participants about useful and safe exercises, assists them in achieving exercise goals and creates a fun workout environment for all populations.

Essential Functions

  • Educates members on safe techniques and guidelines.
  • Greets and encourages all members and orients new participants. Be available before and after class to answer participants' questions.
  • Starts and finishes class on time as scheduled.
  • Instructs class to the ability level of the students participating.
  • Monitors participants through perceived rate of exertion (i.e. faint, dizziness, chest pain, loss of color, etc.) Contact lifeguard if questionable.
  • Executes the Emergency Procedures.
  • Works with participants to achieve fitness goals.
  • Be aware of regular members and welcome them back if they have been away.
  • Documents equipment problems to supervisor.
  • Attends instructor training and supervisor's meetings.
  • Acts as an ambassador for the YMCA through professional dress, attitude, communication and behavior. Promote the YMCA in a public forum.
  • Performs other job-related duties as requested and necessary.


  • Maintains a Current Group Fitness Instructor Certification and/or 2 or more specific group exercise class certifications, is multi-disciplined and able to teach more than one type of class at the Southeast Ventura County YMCA. Nationally Recognized Group Fitness Instructor Certiications from ACE, ACSM, AEA, AFAA, AFPA, AFPC, ATRI, NETA, USWFA, YMCA. Acceptable Group Class Certifications: Zumba, SilverSneakers, TRX, Les Mills, Arthritis Foundation or similar certification.
  • CPR, AED and First Aid Certification must be kept current throughout employment.
  • Ability to deal with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to communicate with people of all ages.
  • Knowledge of safe exercise techniques and principles.
  • Ability to effectively demonstrate all skills being taught to participants.
  • Maintains a professional attitude toward responsibilities, fellow instructors Y staff and members.
  • All required online training must be completed prior to hire.
  • Criminal record clearance.
